EuroHealthNet welcomes the Council conclusions - today - on closing the gaps within the EU. However, work with all actors and at all levels to implement them through strong action plans in challenging economic and social circumstances will be necessary. European and WHO networks, funds and programmes will play an important part.
EuroHealthNet Director - Clive Needle - underlines the idea of an EU-wide health push is promising, because so many initiatives remain at regional and local level. However, lifestyle factors should not be the only focus of attention. "It is very important that the Council [of Ministers] addresses health equality and its underlying social, economic and environmental causes, and not just lifestyle factors". "The real challenge will be to see how these commitments will be translated into action."
