Fonds Gesundes Österreich was founded in 1998 as the national contact point and funding office for prevention and health promotion based on a special law that is considered a model internationally. Health Promotion Austria funds projects, develops activities and campaigns on health promotion. The central aim is to help as many people in Austria as possible to achieve a healthy lifestyle and to live in a healthy environment day-to-day.
Health Promotion Austria supports the following in the health promotion field:
- practical and scientific projects,
- structural development,
- and continuing training and networking.
Other important tasks are as follows:
- To raise awareness about prevention and health promotion among as many people as possible with information, education and public relations work.
- To support activities at the myriad of self-help organizations in Austria.
Health Promotion Austria receives € 7.25 million in public funds each year to conduct its activities.
Fonds Gesundes Österreich has been a division of Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG) since 1 August 2006.
Health in Country
Projects & Programmes
Promoting health in concrete terms is a central task of Fonds Gesundes Österreich. Thus far, more than € 25 million has gone into supporting 542 projects (approved/recommended up to now).
The following projects in the fields of health promotion and primary prevention are funded:
- Practical projects and scientific projects based on a holistic concept of health;
- Development of structures;
- Networking and continuing education.

Fonds Gesundes Österreich continually publishes a variety of brochures and other information materials on all aspects of health promotion. Here are the most important tools used to disseminate information on health promotion and health-risk behaviors and structures:
Campaigns
Since 1999, they carry out wide-ranging campaigns to improve awareness, especially on lifestyle issues, such as physical activity, nutrition, mental health, or alcohol consumption.
Magazine "Gesundes Osterreich"
Quarterly magazine on health promotion and disease prevention entitled “Gesundes Osterreich" (Healthy Austria) was established to promote an exchange of information on health promotion and prevention. It reports on current debates, events, publications, interesting research studies and sponsored projects. You can order a free subscription or download the magazine in PDF format.

Brochures
Five brochures with practical tips on: physical activity, nutrition, mental health, "Growing older, staying active." and health of plants. All brochures can be ordered free of charge or download in PDF format. You will find a wealth of valuable tips and addresses in the brochures and folders.
Media Work
Press conferences, press releases and working closely with media representatives contributes to spreading their key messages on prevention and health promotion, and to make known their projects.
