INPES - the national institute for prevention and health education (L’Institut national de prévention et d’éducation pour la santé) is a public health institute created in 2002. INPES is in particular responsible for implementing policies on disease prevention and health education in the broader context of policy guidelines for public health.
INPES missions are :
- Expertise and advice for prevention and health promotion
- Development of health education
- Implementation of prevention programmes
INPES is responsible for addiction behaviour, infectious diseases, chronicle diseases, lifestyles, life risks and mental health in care places, school and extra scholar places, workplaces, territorial collectivities, regional education services for health.

Programmes
11 programmes structure the activities of INPES. They focus on a team or a target group of the population, and take into account the social inequalities in health:
- Alcohol
- Tobacco
- Addiction
- Nutrition
- Mental Health
- Environmental healthand accidents of everyday life
- AIDS(HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Other infectious diseases
- Chronic diseases and patient education

Projects
As part of its European and international activities, Inpes is currently participating in the following European projects financed by the European Commission’s Department of Health and Consumer Protection:
- Crossing Bridges, a political project supported by numerous public health institutions in Europe. It is based on the work performed in the Determine project and on the results of the Finnish Presidency, whose HIAP strategy was one of the main themes. It completes the initiatives already commenced, namely by the OMS Bureau in Venice and the Health Observatory in Brussels. It will be included in the more general initiative of the “Global action on Health Equity network of the commission on health-related social factors (CSDH).”
- Mental e-health: This project aims to create a tool to develop, evaluate and implement initiatives online on the topic of depression, which can be applied to a wide variety of environments, such as the working environment, the community and basic needs. It is supported by Holland’s Trimbos institute. This tool will be divided into six sections:
- evaluation of the needs in mental e-health
- the creation of initiatives in mental e-health
- knowledge of mental e-health
- evaluation of the mental e-health initiatives
- a roadmap for implementing the tool
- the preliminary experiences of Holland, Spain, United Kingdom and the Czech Republic.
This project will facilitate:
- An online tool to develop initiatives and evaluate depression in young adults,
- Three pilot versions in English, Spanish and Czech of the Dutch tool “Colour your life”,
- Three evaluation reports of this tool
- A final report.
- PASEO (Building policy capacities for health promotion through physical activity among sedentary older people), is a project seeking to strengthen health promotion options through physical activity in older sedentary people in 15 European countries (www.paseonet.org). The aim is encourage older sedentary people to become more active, and thus combat health-related inequalities.
- European scientific and technical network on health, migration and people living in Poverty – ENHMP is a project aiming to implement a European platform to develop and share knowledge to promote health and social integration of migrants and very underprivileged people by involving all the organisations concerned with these issues.
News & Publications
Catalogue
Inpes conducts extensive editing activities. Each year, the Institute edits and disseminates around 70 to 80 million documents intended for the general public and health and education professionals. Its catalogue includes some 230 references, most of which are free of charge (brochures, leaflets, posters, educational packs, stickers, books, CDs, audio cassettes and video etc.). These documents can also be downloaded on the Institute’s website.

Human health
Human health is a bimonthly magazine edited by the INPES and published in 10,000 copies. This 52-page magazine, completely dedicated to health education, is designed to be both a tool for information and thinking, as well as an aid for action. To access the magazine, please click here.
