EU-SILC - European Survey on Income and Living Conditions
According to numerous indicators of health status and health determinants, Slovenia is close to the EU average but falls among the EU countries that have a greater burden of morbidity and mortality from suicides, effects of alcohol abuse and accident related injuries.
Chronic diseases are predominantly responsible for the burden of disease in all developed European countries, including Slovenia. The three most common reasons for the burden of disease determined by premature mortality and functional incapacity of the population are, in Slovenia, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and mental disorders.
Projections show that cancer especially will increase. Without effective prevention we shall witness a sharp increase in obesity and type II diabetes, and an increase of depressions and osteoporotic fractures. On average, the residents of Sloveniaalready live seven years with a chronic disease or any of the types of reduced capacity, which represents 9% of the total life expectancy. A significant problem is also emerging in the so-called new pathology of Slovenian children and adolescents – their unhealthy lifestyles and psychosocial issues.
With the ageing population in Slovenia, the predominant pathology of chronic diseases and health inequalities requires a comprehensive, responsible, and innovative approach from the entire society, policies, profession, and civil society. A more focused and active approach of all social structures is needed for maintaining and improving health, and reducing health inequalities. This urges a new strategic framework at all levels of the government and political structures, and the direction to pursue the goals of promoting health and health equality in their policies and strategies. Public health requires a national strategy and the construction of a comprehensive system with a contemporary approach, capacities and programmes in the field of public health.
