Clive Needle

Responsibilities

Clive Needle is responsible for strategic advice and direction of the network, and accountable to the Board for overall office performance. He devised and leads the special project Equity Channel, and advises the EC co-funded project DETERMINE. He edits network publications and advises all core activities.

Clive joined EuroHealthNet as strategic advisor in 2000 following his consultative report and recommendations on network progress. Since then he has helped to lead development and policy initiatives, including successive EC co-funded projects on health inequalities, social inclusion and capacity building for health promotion. During this time he has represented the network as a founding member of the EU Health Policy Forum and at numerous international events, including as Chair of the EC Mental Health Consultative Platform and at EU Presidency events in several states.

Clive is also an independent public policy advisor to several not for profit organisations. He has worked at many events with the World Health Organisation, academic and civil society bodies, as a speaker, advisor, chair and facilitator. He has written and presented extensively on EU and public policy issues, for specialist and general media.

Background

Prior to his work with EuroHealthNet Clive worked in business management, voluntary organisations and on political campaigns. He was an elected Member of the European Parliament 1994-99, working particularly on health and development issues, including authorship of the 1999 Report on the Future of EU Public Health. Clive lives in England with his wife Eileen King and family.

Responsibilities

Caroline Costongs is deputy director at EuroHealthNet, where she worked since 1999. She provides management of office staff and activities and contributes to the development of all projects, including advocacy. She is responsible for implementation of the EuroHealthNet work programme, network development, finances, acquisition and submission of new EU project proposals. Caroline represents EuroHealthNet on the EU Expert Group on Health Inequalities and Social Determinants.

Background

Caroline has an MA in Public Health from the University of Maastricht. At EuroHealthNet she coordinated several EC co-funded projects on health inequalities, social inclusion and capacity building for health promotion. Before she joined EuroHealthNet, she worked at the Netherlands Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation where she set up and coordinated a national campaign on physical activity promotion for young people. Caroline also worked at the Health Institute of the Liverpool John Moores University where she did research on intersectoral collaboration for health as part of an EU Research Project (FP4). Before that, she was active at the National Capacity Building Institute of the Ministry of Education in a Latin-American country. Caroline has three children and lives with her family in Tervuren.

Responsibilities

Karen Vandeweghe joined EuroHealthNet in January 2011. Karen will support EuroHealthNet in the implementation of the strategic development plan 2010-2014. She is responsible for the core membership services and the capacity building activities of the network (study visits, networking events, training days). She is the contact point for questions related to the network. She also supports the development of new projects and funding opportunities for the network, general network and promotion activities, and other management needs.  

Background

Karen has experience in the areas of communications, networking and advocacy. She gained experience in social and health policies, having worked as information and parliament officer for AGE – the European Older People’s Platform. She has experience in structural funds and regional development, having worked as communications manager for the INTERACT programme (EU-funded programme of territorial cooperation) in Bratislava, Slovakia. She also worked for the Belgian public sector, in particular for the Ministry of Interior, Foreigners' Department. She first studied Germanic philology at the university of Ghent (Belgium), and then specialized in European policies, public administration and public management at the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium), the University of Aalborg (Denmark), the University of Leuven (Belgium), the Deutsche Hochschule fur Verwaltungswissenschaften in Speyer (Germany) and the Solvay Management School in Brussels (Belgium). She did several traineeships at European and international level, such as for UNESCO and the European Parliament.

 

Chrysi Spyropoulos

Responsibilities

As the Administration Officer, Chrysi assists the overall management of the office and network. She is responsible for supporting the team in organising events, preparing meetings, administer i.e. the legal and clerical aspects of EuroHealthNet, and assisting in the preparation of reports and materials. Furthermore, she prepares the annual General Assembly or other meetings with partner institutions. She is also in charge of financial administration.

Background

Before joining EuroHealthNet in May 2009, Chrysi worked as an administrative assistant holding several positions in numerous Brussels-based enterprises and associations. Next to her mother tongues Greek and French, Chrysi is a fluent speaker in English and Dutch and also speaks German and Spanish.

Beatriz Romero

Beatriz joined EuroHealthnet for an internship. She assists the PROGRESS team in updating and developing the EuroHealthNet website and the online community “Equity Channel”. She contributes articles to the internal and external newsletters. She will also be involved in the organisation of EuroHealthNet Equity Week.

Before joining EuroHealthNet in April 2012, Beatriz worked in Belgium as a European Volunteer (EVS) in Antwerp European Youth Capital 2011, collaborating with the Communication and Logistic teams. From 2005 till 2010, she worked as a journalist in ABC, one of the most important national newspapers in Spain. She has also been a stagier in the European Parliament. She studied journalism in Complutense University in Madrid, where she also attended a Master in Written Journalism. She is currently studying Law.

Responsibilities

Stecy’s role is to develop and coordinate the Equity Channel project and specifically its EU policy dialogues. This includes effective liaison between EuroHealthNet and the International Collaboration on the Social Determinants of Health to deliver high quality engagement and advocacy with and between relevant stakeholders, potential partners and policy makers to help to achieve sustainable progress in actions to tackle the social determinants of health.

Background

Stecy Yghemonos joined the EuroHealthNet office in August 2009. His background includes wide experience in the areas of project coordination, policy dialogue and communications. Stecy’s previous positions gave him the opportunity to be active in a variety of international advocacy projects focusing on issues such as press freedom, social justice, children’s rights and of course health.

Responsibilities

John Considine is the policy officer for the Equity Channel special project. His core responsibilities include analysing and interpreting new information arising from international work on SDH and HE while also analysing EU policies in key relevant sectors. This helps to develop a sustainable resource of knowledge about legislation and work programmes that may offer opportunities for the Equity Channel and its partners. Central to this function is the compilation of a policy dossier that is regularly updated based on all the latest EU policy developments in the priority policy areas that are relevant to the Equity Channel project. 

Background

John joined EuroHealthNet in August 2009, having previously completed a traineeship in the European Commission on the Cabinet staff for Mr. Charlie McCreevy, EU Commissioner for Internal Market and Services. He worked on a range of portfolio issues related to the internal market and financial services but also on non-portfolio related issues, Cross-Border Patent Rights. Prior to this, John worked as a planning assistant for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, working on conferences pertaining to Aid Effectiveness, Human Trafficking and Migration and Parliamentary Best Practices and Procedures.  John has a BA International in History and Politics from University College Dublin and graduated from University College London in 2008 with an MSc in European Public Policy.

Responsibilities

Ariane Moret joined the EuroHealthNet office as a Communications Coordinator in January 2011. She will be your contact person for any questions/requests you may have regarding Health Highlights or the EuroHealthNet communication strategy.

Background

Ariane is French and studied International and European law and journalism, in Bordeaux (France) and in The Hague (The Netherlands). She moved to Brussels in 1999 when she started to work at European level, for the European Institutions and for European Federations. She spent 7 years at the European Commission and at the European Parliament as a Communication Manager and Press Officer. She coordinated different communication campaigns (European Constitution, Asylum and Immigration policy).  She gained some experience in health issues working for the European Consumers’ Organisation (BEUC).

Linden Farrer

Responsibilities
As Projects and Policy Officer, Linden liaises between research, policy and communications, helping translate research findings into communications messages and advocacy policies. In particular, he works on DRIVERS, an evaluation of cross-sectoral collaboration in the EU School Fruit Scheme, the Healthy Ageing website, and a number of other PROGRESS-funded communications and policies-related initiatives.

Background
Linden joined EuroHealthNet in July 2011. He studied history and anthropology at Oxford Brookes University and obtained an MSc in Social Research Methods from the University of Sussex. He has previous experience working in the UK and Brussels on European Social Fund, Youth in Action, PROGRESS, and 7th Framework Programme projects concentrating on equal opportunities, employability, disadvantage and health. Immediately prior to joining EuroHealthNet he was responsible for dissemination and communications of the FAMILYPLATFORM social platform research project, which synthesised existing knowledge, forecasted future conditions, and developed a research agenda for the European Union on families and family policy.

Responsibilities

Ingrid is responsible for coordinating the DETERMINE project, which aims to progress action on the social determinants of health in an EU context. This entails working with the project management team, who coordinate the different DETERMINE work strands, the project officer and project participants to shape, guide, contribute to, bring together and communicate DETERMINE outcomes. It also involves the organisation of all DETERMINE related events to ensure that DETERMINE objectives are met

Background

Ingrid Stegeman has been with EuroHealthNet since 2002. She has worked on Health Inequalities, Social Inclusion and Health, and Health Impact Assessment and was appointed as DETERMINE coordinator from 2008. Prior to joining EuroHealthNet, she was active in the field of children's rights and worked as a project assisstant and researcher for various organisations in the field. Ingrid has a BA in International Studies from the Vassar College in New York, and an MA in Political Sciences from the University of Amsterdam (UvA), and a Certificate in Project Management (BU).

Responsibilities

Yoline Kuipers is primarily responsible for the partnership and communication functions of the Equity Channel special project. She supports and develops the content of several online tools, as well as to bring together a wide network of people with an interest in health equity. Yoline is also engaged in liaison work with partners and EU bodies, for example by maintaining publications and presentations, shared calendars of events and a routemap for the International Collaboration on the Social Determinants of Health.

Furthermore Yoline coordinates the Special Interest Group on Nutrition and Physical Activity and participates and reports on meetings of the EU Platform on Diet, Physical Activity and Health. She has published a report on obesity and health equity in July 2009 (‘Focusing on obesity through a health equity lens’) and is involved in policy work focusing on food, land use and planning, and CAP reform.

Finally she supports overall management programme needs, especially contributing to online and publication tools including newsletters, portfolio and the organisation’s website.

Background

Yoline joined EuroHealthNet in November 2008, and has a degree in Biomedical Sciences and Journalism and New Media. She was involved in a project of the RIVM (Dutch Institute of Health and the Environment) which focused on e-health and did a stage at the headquarters of WHO, at the department of the International Health Regulations.

Bruno works as a stagiaire in research and knowledge and he is currently involved in the DRIVERS for Health Equity, Equity Action and Crossing Bridges projects. He also works as a research and knowledge assistant and he is currently involved in the DRIVERS for Health Equity, Equity Action and Crossing Bridges projects.

Bruno has a degree in Political Science and International Relations from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Before joining EuroHealthNet he worked on the research and communication project ‘Reporting on the European Social Funds Interventions’ for DG Employment. He has also worked in the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs assisting diplomats in the Department of International Organisations.

Responsibilities

As Research and Knowledge coordinator, Claudia Marinetti’s role is to link with research-related European initiatives concerning health, health inequities and their social determinants, and to feed research into the organization’s work. In particular, Claudia is responsible for the coordination of DRIVERS “Addressing the strategic Determinants to Reduce health Inequity Via 1) Early childhood development, 2) Realising fair employment, and 3) Social protection.”

The coordination of this project entails working with the project management team, the project officer and project participants to shape, steer, contribute to, bring together and disseminate DRIVERS outcomes. It also involves research activities, the organisation of DRIVERS related events, as well as project administration and consortium management.

Background

Claudia joined EuroHealthNet in March 2010. Her background is in Social Psychology, with an MSc in Organizational and Social Psychology (University of Padua, Italy), and a PhD in Social and Applied Psychology (University of Oxford, UK). Prior to joining EuroHealthNet, she has conducted and coordinated research on inequality issues linked to prejudice and discrimination, socio-economic status, and conflict. She has been involved in several cross-cultural projects and in work on issues related to immigration and low socio-economical backgrounds, including education outcomes and resources accessibility.

Responsibilities

Cristina Chiotan is presently working under the Developing Public Health Capacity Project being responsible for the data collection from Member States. She is also directly involved in developing the Assessment Tool and responsible for performing the analysis of the country specific case studies. She is providing support for GRADIENT financial and technical reporting and technical support to WP 2, 3 and 5. Starting with January 2011, she is responsible for SPREAD Vision 2050 project - to promote and support health as a cross cutting theme in areas like sustainable living, moving and consuming; to ensure that healthy and sustainable lifestyles are included into future EU research agenda on sustainable development.

Background

Cristina joined EuroHealthNet as project officer in 2009 for the development of the capacity building activities of the DETERMINE project. She acted as a central liaison point for Consortium Members’ capacity building and awareness raising actions, and supports their efforts to implement their chosen activities. She also ensured networking with other organizations and brought together relevant information and knowledge to develop capacity in addressing the Social Determinants of Health Inequalities, as well as contributing generally to project and network actions. She has over 10 years of experience in public health, capacity building and intersectoral partnerships. After graduating as medical doctor, she specialised in public health and health management. She has successfully contributed to health care systems reform implementation in Romania, while working initially in the Ministry of Health, and then in USAID, UNICEF and European funded public health programmes. She has brought specific contributions to strategic leadership, project development and partnerships development in an evaluative and rapidly changing society.
