Press Release - EuroHealthNet and South-Eastern Europe Health Network: For a further cooperation for public health systems

Today, EuroHealthNet and the South-Eastern Europe Health Network (SEEHN) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to reinforce their cooperation in the field of public health.

Recognizing the importance of public health to support political cooperation and economic development in the SEE Region and in Europe, EuroHealthnet and SEEHN want to expand their exchange in public health in a spirit of equality, reciprocity and mutual benefit.

The aim of such a partnership for cooperation is to strengthen public health services and capacities as well as to improving health equity. Both organisations will focus on jointly proposed subject areas, such as public health system strengthening, prevention of non-communicable diseases, mental health, health inequalities and the social determinants of health.

David Pattison, President of EuroHealthNet underlined “The signing of this memorandum of understanding is an important milestone in the fight to reduce inequalities and improve the health and wellbeing of approximately 560 million citizens across Europe. EuroHealthNet looks forwards to this exciting partnership growing and developing in the coming years and is confident the networks will make a significant contribution to both policy development and implementation”.

Press Release - EuroHealthNet welcomes the Council conclusions on closing health gaps within the EU

EuroHealthNet welcomes the Council conclusions - today - on closing the gaps within the EU. However, work with all actors and at all levels to implement them through strong action plans in challenging economic and social circumstances will be necessary. European and WHO networks, funds and programmes will play an important part.

EuroHealthNet Director - Clive Needle - underlines the idea of an EU-wide health push is promising, because so many initiatives remain at regional and local level.  However, lifestyle factors should not be the only focus of attention. “It is very important that the Council [of Ministers] addresses health equality and its underlying social, economic and environmental causes, and not just lifestyle factors”. “The real challenge will be to see how these commitments will be translated into action.”

Press Release - Public health bodies refute food industry claims that “sin taxes” harm vulnerable people

EuroHealthNet, the European network of public bodies responsible for health promotion and public health measures, today refuted a statement by some food industries that new taxes on less nutritious food products will “hit” poorer people. EuroHealthNet member agencies work at national and regional levels to identify causes of the massive increases in obesity concerning policy makers, and are also part of the EU Platform on Diet, Health and Physical Activity.

Speaking today in Brussels, EuroHealthNet Director Clive Needle praised States such as Denmark, France and Hungary who have taken the lead, and said industry criticism shows that it realises the new taxes will be effective in bringing benefits to economies and changing consumer behaviours.

Good food producers have nothing to fear from states acting to protect the health of people across the social gradient. We have worked for decades on why health inequalities persist, and better access to good quality affordable food is part of the solution. Taxing less healthy foodstuffs will encourage people – who are often confused by complex nutritional information – to choose more fruit and vegetables as part of  a balanced diet, and to reduce consumption of salt, sugars and fats. We are happy to work with any producers who want to help that process, but we will also continue to recommend appropriate regulations and financial measures by states and the EU in addition to voluntary negotiations

Press Release - For EPHAC, the legislative package "CAP towards 2020" does not go far enough

Today, the Commission published their vision for the Common Agriculture Policy towards 2020. The European Public Health and Agriculture Consortium (EPHAC) welcomes the European Commission’s recognition of the urgent challenges of climate change and increasing pressure on the world’s resources. However, EPHAC believes the proposals largely ignore public health and do not go far enough towards a truly sustainable food and farming policy.

The Commission Communication on the CAP in November included public health as a priority and recognised the increasing focus on nutrition and sustainable consumption as part of the larger societal issues that CAP must deliver on.” said Clive Needle, Chair of the European Public Health and Agriculture Consortium and Director of EuroHealthNet. “The legislative package presented today does not go far enough or adequately address the radical changes that will need to be made in production and consumption to address the challenges of chronic disease, climate change and feeding an increasing global population adequately, equitably and sustainably.
