Mental Health
Background:

Mental ill-health was identified as "Europe’s unseen killer"" by EU Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou. It is a growing problem with high economic and social costs.

The most common problems are anxiety, depression and suicide. They are largely preventable. Therefore, prevention and promotion policies are the critical elements in an integrated mental health strategy at national level.

Aims & Objectives:

The objective of the project on “European Mental Health Implementation (EMIP)" was to introduce and implement strategies to cope with stress and depression in the workplace in the EU Member States and in applicant countries through collaboration amongst the key networks and the involvement of local policy makers.

In particular the project aimed at bringing together key stakeholders to support implementation of policies for mental health promotion and the prevention of mental disorders in Europe, by sharing experiences on what works in promotion activities, and about how to reduce risks and prevent mental ill-health.

Activities:

In the course of the project, models of good practices on promotion and prevention were presented during a series of national workshops in Austria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Slovenia.

The conclusions and recommendations from the National Workshops were presented at a European Conference in March 2006 in Budapest.

Contract holder and coordinator: German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (FIOSH)

The EMIP was funded under EC Public Health Action Programme.
