On 12-14 March, WHO Europe and EuroHealthNet will be co-hosting an important consultation on the European Action Plan for Strengthening Public Health Capacities and Services, commonly referred to as the European Public Health Action Plan.
The consensus among experts is that there is an urgent need to strengthen Public Health in Europe. Hans Kluge of WHO Europe says "our goal is that the European Public Health Action Plan will lead to concrete improvements in the Region. This consultation will foster debate about the action plan and mobilise key public health actors in the European Region".
Clive Needle of EuroHealthNet says "this consultation and action plan is important and timely, given the need for strong public health systems which both the WHO and EU are looking to help strengthen in challenging times. I am pleased that over 80 delegates from 56 states and organisations will contribute their expertise to this vital process, and that EuroHealthNet can play a helpful partnership role."
The consultation is the second in a series of informal consultations which are being conducted in parallel to the formal consultation process with WHO Member States.
The final draft of the European Public Health Action Plan, incorporating the feedback received in the consultation process, will be submitted to the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in Malta in September 2012.
