UNICEF published an assessment of the Social and Poverty Impacts of the Economic Crisis in Romania for the period 2009-2010 where it confirms that fairly obvious fact in charting the effects of the Romanian economic and financial crisis during the period 2009-2010, when the crisis was at its peak.
The research found that 84% of respondents said that the crisis had affected their households "much or "very much". Poverty increased, unemployment soared, work in the informal sector dried up and remittances from abroad were down. The middle class suffered and the poor got poorer.
