BEST-COST project launches podcast series on measuring the health costs of pollution
Air pollution is the largest environmental health risk in Europe. It is linked to health conditions such as asthma, lung cancer, heart diseases, and stroke. At the same time, more than one in five people in Europe are exposed to chronic noise levels from transport that are considered harmful to their health.
Pollution harms our health – but these harms are not felt equally. The lasting impacts from air and noise pollution are worse felt by vulnerable communities, and contribute to widening socioeconomic inequalities.
BEST-COST is an EU-funded research project working to improve methodologies to better understand the socioeconomic cost of environmental stressors, focusing on air and noise pollution. The project aims to support improved policies and practices that reduce the burden of disease, and create living and working environments that are more health-promoting, equitable and sustainable.
As project lead for communications and dissemination, EuroHealthNet produced a podcast series where we sat down with different researchers from the BEST-COST project to learn about their work on the BEST-COST methods and tools – to break down the scientific process and ask them what the conclusions mean for policymaking.
The BEST-COST podcast series launched with three episodes for listeners to dive into and learn more about the work behind calculating the health costs of pollution:
- The cost of pollution: How BEST-COST is assessing socioeconomic inequalities
- How polluted is your neighbourhood? – what does air and noise pollution mean for people’s wellbeing
- healthiar – a tool for tackling pollution
