Joint call for EU agricultural and food systems research and innovation that delivers societal value
A joint call to embed public health, equity, wider societal value and One Health in Europe’s future agricultural and food-systems research and innovation agendas.
Europe’s future food systems will be shaped by the research and innovation priorities we set today. With significant public investment supporting agricultural and food-system research, we believe these investments must deliver value not only through innovation and economic growth, but also for people, communities and society as a whole.
This joint call responds to the current debate around the AgRI 2040 and Food 2040 frameworks, which provide a strategic direction for future research and innovation in Europe’s food and agricultural systems. We are calling for these agendas, and the programmes that implement them, to place public health, equity, wider societal value and the One Health approach firmly at their core.

What are we calling for?
We want to bring these perspectives into the ongoing discussion about AgRI 2040 and Food 2040 and how these frameworks will be implemented.
Our joint statement seeks dialogue with those leading this process and calls for public health, equity, wider societal value and One Health to be embedded throughout the design, funding and evaluation of Europe’s future agricultural and food-systems research and innovation programmes.
Our call focuses on six priorities:
- Societal value at the heart of research and innovation
- Food security and the right to food
- Health and equity across the food system
- Embrace a whole food systems perspective
- Strengthen governance and safeguard the public interest
- Measure and account for societal impact
