Public Health Meetings France: Reducing the Burden of Alcohol “International Public Policy Challenges”
Public Health France is holding its hybrid event “Reducing the Burden of Alcohol: International Public Policy Challenges” (in English) on the 20th of June as part of the 2023 French Public Health meetings. This event is also part of EuroHealthNet’s Country Exchange Visit in France, taking place on the 19-21 June.
Alcohol consumption has been declining in volume in France since the 1960s, but France remains among the highest consuming OECD countries in terms of the volume of pure alcohol consumed per capita. The health and social consequences of alcohol consumption in France are major, since alcohol is France one of the 3 leading causes of preventable death as well as one of the leading causes of hospitalisation.
This session proposes to compare the challenges of public policies in terms of reducing the risks and harms associated with alcohol consumption at the international level. After an overview of alcohol consumption and public policies in Europe, several strategies and examples of implementation in different countries will be proposed. The discussions will continue with a round table on the challenges of public health in the face of the economic interests of a sector: what are the strategies used by lobbies linked to the alcohol industry, and how can public health deal with them? What are the keys to success for the implementation of effective prevention measures?
