EuroHealthNet calls for EU to allow local governments to ban fast food outlets near schools
EuroHealthNet has sent a letter to the rapporteur on the Committee of the Regions’ opinion on the future of the Single Market and the EU’s competitiveness. The letter expresses concern about the limited legal instruments local authorities can use to reduce the growing number of outlets offering ultra-processed foods and foods high in fat, sugar, and salt.
EuroHealthNet calls for EU rules to allow public health-based exemptions to the EU Services Directive. This Directive aims to remove the barriers to trade in services but, by doing so, limits the power of local governments to address unhealthy food environments.
