EuroHealthNet responds to the EU consultation on the revision of the Tobacco Products and Tobacco Advertising Directives
EuroHealthNet contributed to the European Commission’s call to evaluate the legal framework for tobacco control. The consultation was launched to evaluate the extent to which the framework has fulfilled its established goals and objectives, questioning factors such as the rapid rise in emerging products and recent technical developments, product regulation, advertising, promotion and sponsorship, in the broader context of related tobacco control policies.
EuroHealthNet have responded highlighting the underlying structural determinants of tobacco use, linking the commercial determinants, impacts on the young population and children, and the uptake of novel tobacco/heated nicotine products. “As tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death and disease, responsible for over 750 000 deaths in the EU per year. The Tobacco Products (TPD) and Tobacco Advertising (TAD) revision is urgent to lower tobacco use to 5% by 2040 (as per the EU Cancer Plan) and achieve a Tobacco-Free Generation. Given the uptake of the novel products among new and younger generation of smokers, socio-economic, skills and literacy, environmental and commercial interest and inequalities involved, a much stronger and agile EU-wide public health protection is needed.”
