Europe-wide research programme on social prescribing launched
A Europe-wide research programme on social prescribing was launched today.
Social Prescribing EU, led by Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, is set to examine the effects of social prescribing, a healthcare approach that connects patients with non-medical support services. Unlike traditional prescriptions, this method links patients to trained professionals known as 'link workers', who help them access community activities and services such as art and gym classes, befriending sessions, and financial advice. The five-year initiative, funded by the European Commission, will focus on vulnerable groups such as those living alone, LGBTIQ individuals, refugees, and first-generation immigrants. Researchers across eight countries will analyse its impact, aiming to determine how social prescribing can improve health and wellbeing.
Not all health problems are caused by pathogens, stress and social pressures can also lead to illness. Social prescribing addresses these factors by guiding patients toward local support networks instead of relying solely on medical treatment. For example, someone struggling with loneliness might be encouraged to join a community art class or a running group, while a patient with financial worries could receive help to manage debts or access welfare support.
“Social prescribing is an innovative way to guide people with social problems away from primary healthcare and towards local services,” says Prof. Wolfram Herrmann, leader of the Social Prescribing-EU (SP-EU) project. “So far, this approach hasn’t been designed specifically for vulnerable groups. That’s why we’re focusing on people who live alone, LGBTIQ individuals, refugees, and first-generation immigrants, to see how well it works for them.”
By studying different social prescribing models, researchers hope to understand its potential to improve health, and whether it could become an important part of healthcare in the future.
