Health Equity and the Preventive Care Act in Germany – EuroHealthNet Country Exchange Visit October, Germany
The report of this Country Exchange Visit can be found here.
EuroHealthNet, in partnership with the German Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA), organised this country exchange visit in Berlin, Germany, on 10-11 October 2017.
The Preventive Care Act, approved in 2015, seeks to tackle health inequalities challenges across the country by:
- focusing on prevention instead of treatment,
- giving special attention to vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and unemployed people, and
- applying a ‘settings approach;, including child and youth facilities, schools, universities, worksites, or daycare centers.
To make sure how this work in practical terms, participants visited two local good practices:
- SOS Family Centre Hellersdorf-Ost
- Information centre of the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) Marzahn-Hellersdorf
that bring together health promotion professionals and institutions in order to strengthen competencies of disadvantages families, and improve their access to better health.
Participants reflected on the visit and proposed some recommendations for the further development of their organisations and on what should be done at the EU level to give prevention a more important place at policy level and in the public opinion.
Presentations and full documentation are available in the members’ section of the website.
EuroHealthNet study visit are supported by the European Commission, through the Programme for Employment and Social Innovation (EaSI 2014-2020)

About EuroHealthNet Country Exchange Visits
EuroHealthNet Country Exchange Visits are members-only events that are open to senior delegates. The aim is two-fold, namely (1) to exchange good practices and policies on selected core themes and showcase members’ work to a selection of senior European colleagues and, at the same time, (2) discuss how related EU policy processes may support health equity at national, regional and local levels.
