Joint call to the Commission to not backtrack on the work on food systems
EuroHealthNet and co-signatories of this Joint Letter write to express our deep concern over the absence of a legislative framework for Sustainable Food Systems (FSFS) in the EU Commission’s 2024 Work Programme. Not presenting the FSFS proposal means breaking promises made to EU citizens, who increasingly seek affordable, healthy and sustainable food.
We urge President von der Leyen to present an ambitious FSFS proposal before the end of her mandate. It is essential to prioritise the transition to sustainable food systems and not let the strategic dialogue on EU agriculture delay legislative work. The dialogue should involve all stakeholders and adopt a holistic food systems approach.
Co-leadership and collaboration between different DGs are necessary to address the various issues related to the future of food and food systems. We call on the Commission to fulfill its commitment to an environmentally friendly, fair, and healthy food system by presenting an ambitious FSFS proposal and ensuring an inclusive strategic dialogue.
