Poverty and Health Congress | Kongress Armut und Gesundheit (EuroHealthNet speaking)
This event will be held in German.
This 30th edition of the congress will explore the intersection of health and democracy. Discussions will focus on reducing health inequalities and creating a fairer, healthier society, particularly in the context of climate and environmental changes.
The congress views health promotion as a democratic project, emphasising that strong democratic processes enhance health equity, self-determination, and participation. Social support and trust in institutions are crucial for well-being, and tackling poverty is inseparable from strengthening democracy. This theme will be reflected throughout the event, including in the opening speech by neuroscientist and professor Maren Urner, who advocates for a new approach to societal and environmental challenges that balances rational thinking with emotional intelligence and compassion.
Federal Minister of Health Prof. Dr Karl Lauterbach and Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner will be patrons of the event, reinforcing the political relevance of health equity.
EuroHealthNet's involvement
EuroHealthNet will participate in a panel titled Towards a health-promoting European overall policy – Potentials from the Joint Action PreventNCD, focusing on the role of the European Joint Action Prevent NCD (JANCD) in addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which cause two-thirds of premature deaths in Europe. With 25 countries involved, including Germany, JANCD aims to reduce NCD risk factors shaped by social, individual, and environmental determinants.
The panel will emphasise the need for behavioural and situational measures, cross-sectoral cooperation, and addressing social health inequalities. The panel will explore how JANCD can influence the German prevention landscape through collaborative strategies to reduce NCD risk factors. It will conclude with a session on actionable steps to achieve health equity through cross-sector collaboration and democratic engagement.
