The Lancet Commission on the European Health Union: strengthening the union for and through health
Health has long been woven into the European project, a quiet force behind peace, prosperity, and social cohesion. But while crises have pushed Europe closer together, they have rarely produced a shared vision for health itself.
Now, as demographic change, geopolitical instability, and pressure on public systems reshape the continent, the question is no longer whether Europe should act together on health, but how.
The European Health Union is an opportunity to redefine solidarity for a new era: stronger public health systems, deeper cooperation across borders, and a clearer role for Europe in shaping global health. Backed by 23 commissioners from 15 countries, the Lancet Commission on the European Health Union asks what that future could look like, and what kind of Europe it might help build.
