Joint letter: A health call for decisive, domestic EU climate mitigation to prevent disease and reduce cost
On 9 December 2025, the EU institutions will start their negotiations on the EU’s climate ambition beyond 2030. EuroHealthNet joins the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) and 19 other health organisations across the EU in a joint letter to the Ambassadors of the European Union and Members of the European Parliament, urging them to place people’s health at the centre by agreeing on a decisive EU 2040 climate ambition. Their leadership is essential to protect people across the EU from the climate-driven health emergencies that increase in frequency, intensity and geographical extent and are already affecting Europeans today, especially vulnerable groups – children, the elderly, people with pre-existing conditions, and people facing health inequalities.
The letter calls for
- A decisive 2040 domestic goal with no pollution outsourcing
- Mechanisms that safeguard greater ambition, rather than slowing climate action
- A swift phase-out of all direct and indirect fossil fuels subsidies
