Kicking off 2026: addressing the root causes of poor health
As we step into the new year, EuroHealthNet’s dedication to building a fairer, healthier Europe is as strong as ever. Equipped with a new 2026-2029 framework agreement under the European Social Fund Plus, our Partnership will continue to address one of Europe’s most pressing challenges: worsening health and social inequalities.
We’ve got the evidence...
Our new Social Inequalities in Health in the EU report shows that progress on social inequalities in health has stalled over the last decade. The data tells us that:
- On average, one in three people indicates their health is less than good.
- People with low education are twice as likely to report poor health as those with high education.
- In countries where inequalities have declined, this is often due to (mental) health worsening in higher social groups rather than improving in lower social groups.
These troubling trends highlight the urgent need for policies and actions that go beyond healthcare and focus on prevention. Europe needs to address the root causes of poor health, which result from social inequalities.

Social inequalities in health in the EU
Are countries closing the health gap?
… and we’ve got the tools
By spurring action on key social factors – including job and financial security, education, and access to services – the European Pillar of Social Rights addresses the root causes of health and social inequalities. Its 20 principles set out action at the EU, national, regional, and even local levels, helping to create a healthier Europe.
Developed for public health professionals and decision-makers at all levels, EuroHealthNet’s Flashcard Tool explains how each of the Pillar’s 20 principles connects to public health, shows concrete good practice examples from across Europe, and highlights relevant EU initiatives and resources you can tap into.
The new EU Anti-Poverty Strategy and Social Rights Pillar Action Plan, expected in 2026, will provide an opportunity to further step up EU commitment to tackling social inequalities.
Euronews recently produced a short film centred around a good practice from Greece, supported by the European Social Fund Plus, on bringing primary health care closer to disadvantaged communities, with expert commentary from EuroHealthNet.
Join us in shaping a fairer and healthier Europe in 2026!
Europe’s public health challenges and opportunities require a joint vision and collaboration. We look forward to working together in 2026 to put health and social inequalities in health high on the agenda!
